Our Oat

Grown with Pride
If there’s one thing the Scottish climate is perfect for its growing oats. Our cool conditions and early Summer rainfall are just the thing for plumping out the kernels and slowly ripening the grains. Generations of farmers across the Scottish Borders have been proudly growing oats for centuries and it is here that we source the majority of our finest quality oats. Only oats that are golden in colour, sweet smelling and have been grown as naturally as possible are selected.

The Secret to a Good Oatcake
It’s been said that the Eskimos have 50 words for snow. Well, in Scotland, we have a word for when something is too sticky, we say it’s too ‘claggy’. It’s the best word we know to describe a poorly made oatcake. Who knows? Maybe that’s how it first came to be used! The secret to a light and delicate tasting oatcake is the dough. Speed and timings are critical if the oats are to break down into just the right consistency. Nairn’s oatcakes are made in Edinburgh, where they’ve been made for over 80 years. The way we mix our dough remains a closely guarded secret unchanged for decades.

Gluten Free Care from Field to Plate
The oats in our gluten free range come from specialist British farms. These farms grow oats completely separately, and go to extraordinary lengths to avoid wheat or barley slipping into the mix, either in the field, or from equipment. From seed to plate we do everything we can to make our gluten free range as safe as can be for anyone following a gluten free diet. Our gluten free range is expanding all the time, so there really is plenty to choose from!

A Wholesome Approach

Your Wellbeing at Heart from The Start
Wholegrain oats are a wonderstuff. Whether you’re trying to look after your heart, your digestion or your overall health. While oatcakes have literally been under our noses for 100s of years, (and we’ve been baking them since 1896), it hasn’t stopped us making slight adjustments over the decades to make our recipes even healthier.

Simple and Natural
Today, our New Product Development team continue looking for ways to make our ingredients, recipes and cooking methods as simple, natural and wholesome as possible. Our aim is to make it easy for you to find flavoursome alternatives to sugary snacks or wheat based products.

Sustainable Palm Fruit Oil
We seek to operate with transparency and ethics when it comes to our use of Palm Oil. At a time when just 19% of the world’s total palm oil production is classified as sustainable (Source: RSPO), we are proud to be 100% certified by RSPO (The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) and buy only from a segregated supply chain for Nairn’s branded products.

From Sporrans to Gym Bags
Oats have sustained the Scots for centuries. Lona ago. Scots would mix their oatmeal into a thick paste, flatten and keep in their ‘porridge drawer’. They’d open the drawer and break bits off throughout the long winter months. Thankfully you don’t need the right furniture to make oatcakes nowadays! Here’s a quick guide to the humble oatcake through time, from ‘porridge drawers’ and sporrans to am bags.

Well Baked Ideas
Bakeries have long been at the heart of village life in Scotland. It’s a tradition we’re keen to hang on to, which is why we believe in playing a supporting role in local activities. Not least because our local community gives us the most amazing team, some of whom have worked for Nairn’s for over 40 years. So, when someone brings us a good idea for a good cause, we try to help if we can.

Our Oat Biscuits

Stem Ginger Oat Biscuits
These wholesome Stem Ginger Oat Biscuits pack a flavoursome punch thanks to the mix of stem ginger and ground ginger we use. Like the rest of the range, they contain no artificial colours or flavours, are full of the goodness of wholegrain oats and contain 44 calories per biscuit. Perfect to have with a cuppa, some people tell us they’re great for dunking too…
They also contain 40% less sugar than the average sweet biscuit. We haven’t changed the recipe to reduce the sugar, they are just naturally lower in sugar and naturally delicious.

Mixed Berries Oat Biscuits
Our delicious (or should that be berrylicious?) Mixed Berries Oat Biscuits are bursting with the natural flavour of raspberries and cranberries. And with just 43 calories per biscuit, you needn’t feel too guilty having one (or two) with your morning coffee or afternoon tea.

Salted Caramel Oat Biscuits
NEW to the Oat Biscuit range: Salted Caramel, the perfect sweet-but-not-sweet partner to our wholegrain oats. Buttery caramel fragments mingle with just a sprinkling of sea salt in our signature oat biscuit for a delicious bite with exactly the right level of crunch.
They may taste indulgent, but our Salted Caramel Oat Biscuits actually contain 40% less sugar than other brands*, and, like all our Oat Biscuits, they’re available in useful pouches of five (with four packs in a box) so keep some handy for when you need an oat-fuelled slow release energy boost.
